At least thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
